  • Cornelius Vanderbilt II built this summer home, The Breakers, in Newport, RI in the 1890's. Designed by Richard Morris Hunt (also the architect of the Biltmore mansion in Asheville), it incorporates an incredible palette of materials from all over the world. The vaulting seen in the ceiling here is some of the handywork of the Guastavino brothers, Spanish immigrants that ended up helping to build numerous landmarks on the eastern seaboard.
