The Jefferson Memorial, like the Lincoln Memorial, is much larger than I imagined. Designed by John Russell Pope and completed in 1943, a magnificent dome supported by Ionic columns protects a 19 foot tall statue of Jefferson, standing and looking north toward the Washington Monument and the White House. While the Lincoln Memorial is influenced by the Greek Doric temple form, the Jefferson Memorial incorporated Roman elements favored by Jefferson.
