  • The interior atrium space inside the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, DC evokes the feeling of being in a cavern of sorts, but with wonderful light from a skylight. One of the consistent design themes is the idea of stone that has been eroded by water over thousands of years.

  • The Jefferson Memorial, like the Lincoln Memorial, is much larger than I imagined. Designed by John Russell Pope and completed in 1943, a magnificent dome supported by Ionic columns protects a 19 foot tall statue of Jefferson, standing and looking north toward the Washington Monument and the White House. While the Lincoln Memorial is influenced by the Greek Doric temple form, the Jefferson Memorial incorporated Roman elements favored by Jefferson.

  • Following the form of a Greek Doric temple, the Lincoln Memorial is a colossal structure designed by Henry Bacon and constructed over many years, from 1914 to 1922. The Daniel Chester French sculpture of Lincoln seated in a chair is over 19 feet tall, carved from Georgia Marble.
