10 imagesAsheville, North Carolina is a small city with a great architectural tradition, head and shoulders above that of most similar sized cities. It is one of the few small cities I could see myself living in.

9 imagesCollege and university campuses are unique urban microcosms where master planning efforts can actually be implemented in relatively short order (years rather than decades). They offer a great range of opportunities for designers, from infill that must respond to established context, to rehabilitation, to creating gateways or whole new campuses.

7 imagesThe Charlotte County courthouse, located in Charlotte Court House, Virginia, is a little jewel of a building with a rich history. Considered the only extant Jefferson designed courthouse, it has been in continuous use since its construction in 1824.

6 imagesWe enjoyed our afternoon exploring the historic district of Portsmouth, Virginia. The 1945 Art Deco Commodore Theater was just one of the many architectural gems to be found there. You can still catch a first-run movie and have a nice meal in the restaurant at the same time.

85 imagesThese images are the result of several years worth of vicambulating about the city in all seasons and all weather. Richmond has a wonderful balance of modern urban sites, Victorian neighborhoods, and 19th century industrial areas.

23 imagesThomas Jefferson's Academic Village in Charlottesville, Virginia is the historic core of the University of Virginia. Jefferson could check in on construction progress from his home at Monticello using a telescope. The beautifully proportioned Rotunda presides over the Lawn and was recently completely renovated, including a new copper dome.
